SPJIMR and Novartis launch a new programme to serve the needs of people suffering from sickle cell disease
Raipur, 1st December 2019 : Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) through its Centre for Education in the Social Sector (CEdSS) and the healthcare company Novartis have jointly launched a new initiative to support patients suffering from sickle cell disease.
As part of the new initiative, a team from SPJIMR and Novartis will meet patient advocates, doctors, government officials, caregivers and NGOs across the country in different states to assess the advocacy issues and challenges of patients suffering from sickle cell disease. The discussions will focus on the theme: “What needs to be changed for people living with sickle cell disease”.
Sickle cell disease is a blood disorder that is managed better when caregivers and relatives have the required knowledge and understanding of the disease and what it takes to meet the needs of patients.
The team from SPJIMR and Novartis will initially cover the States of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. The team will be in Raipur on 30th November 2019 at Hotel Puneet International, Opp. Bank of Baroda Pandri Cloth Market (492004) and in Ranchi on 1st December 2019 at Sadar Hospital, Mahatma Gandhi Main Rd, New Barhi Toli, Ranchi, Jharkhand - 834001 in the first round. “We are inviting all the stakeholders concerned for improving the condition of the patients, like doctors, NGOs caregivers, civil society members to come forward on a platform to discuss issues and concerns regarding supporting patients of sickle cell,” said Prof. Rukaiya Joshi, Chairperson – CEdSS.
The discussions will lead to a capacity-building programme over three modules to be held on the SPJIMR campus in Mumbai. The programme is scheduled to run over seven months and will launch later this year.
The new programme expands the work and reach of CEdSS and its unique partnership with Novartis in the area of capacity-building initiatives that educate and train community caregivers and NGOs in the health sector. The new programme will cater specifically to the understanding of care-giving in the case of sickle cell disease.
The new initiatives comes as the partnership between CEdSS and the pharma giant Novartis completes five years. The two have so far trained over 120 people spread across 78 organisations as part of their joint initiative.
The CEdSS is noted for its modular management programme that serves the development sector called the PGPDM and its broader range of teaching-learning initiatives for NGOs and caregivers working for patients of specific disorders.
